Corrosion of steel reinforcement is by far the most important single cause of deterioration in reinforced concrete structures. The risk of corrosion can be substantially reduced by using corrosion-resistant alloys, such as stainless steel, instead of carbon steel reinforcement. However, there is little guidance to specify the depth of concrete cover required when using stainless steel reinforcement.
