This publication reviews the historical development from arches to the development of prestressed concrete bridges, and covers the periods from pre‐1900 and between 1900‐1945, with specific attention to the immediate post war period and during the last 60 years.
Outlined are superstructure cross‐sections and construction methods including the classification of cross‐section, the relationships between cross‐section, span, and construction method, the trends and achievements in construction methods for long span bridges, beam bridges (span‐by‐span and cantilever methods) and some aspects of cable‐stayed bridges, other construction methods. Also, analysis, design methods and standards development are reviewed as well as considering aspects of precast concrete standard bridge beams, movement, flexibility and articulation and other design matters.
