Total shrinkage of concrete includes drying, carbonation and autogenous shrinkage (also called chemical shrinkage or self-desiccation) and it is influenced by all the constituents in concrete, as well as the environment. Whether or not the shrinkage is sufficient to cause cracks to develop depends on the degree of restraint exerted on the concrete, the concrete properties and the reinforcement detailing. Various prediction methods are available.
