This paper presents the results of a series of plant and site trials in which novel concrete railway sleepers have been successfully produced in a sleeper factory using either high levels of fly ash with Portland cement or alkali activated binders. Radio frequency identification technology has also been incorporated to enable tracing of sleepers throughout the production and installation in track and access to original materials databases to facilitate reuse/recycling. Sensors for in situ monitoring have also been trialled.
