Since the Precast Sustainability Charter scheme was introduced in 2007, the precast sector has come a long way in addressing its embodied environmental impacts and emissions. There has been a recent policy shift in the UK and Europe towards construction products’ environmental footprinting and embodied carbon; this will require the precast sector to look again at how it can address the future challenges of its own footprint. This paper reports on the progress made with the Precast Sustainability Charter between 2008 and 2014 and then reports on the main challenges associated with the carbon footprint of precast concrete.
