The influence of integral water-resisting admixtures on the durability of concrete

The realisation of the need for this project occurred during the durability design of a prestigious structure inthe severe exposure environment of the coastal region of the Arabian Peninsula. The structure was to feature a tidal sea water lagoon bounded by reinforced concrete walls. There was already a preceived need for a water-resisting admixture to mitigate the risk of salt re-crystallisation damage (also known as saly weathering, salt hydration, physical salt attack) but the question arose of whether this could also be sufficient to remove the perceived need for stainless steel reinforcement to deal with the risk of chloride-induced corrosion over the long intended working life of the structure?
