The requirement for casting or cutting holes in reinforced concrete beams is a common one, usually to allow for the passage of services. (Wherever possible the structure should be designed to include a service zone within the overall depth to minimise the need for holes for horizontal service runs.) However, even though this is a common situation faced by designers, the guidance available on the design and detailing of beams for such holes is limited and are not explicitly covered by Eurocode 2⁽¹⁾. The aim of this document is to provide designers with guidance on the provision of both vertical and horizontal holes through beams, both pre-formed and post-formed.
